IHD Amed Branch: The process must not be wasted

AMED – The Amed Branch of the Human Rights Association (IHD) held a press conference regarding the developments following Kurdish People’s Leader Abdullah Öcalan’s call. Branch Chair Ercan Yılmaz stated that the call has created a renewed sense of hope in society and emphasized that this opportunity must not be lost due to the arrogance of the state.

Yılmaz drew attention to the devastating consequences of the conflict, which has lasted more than 40 years, pointing out that it has led not only to widespread human rights violations but also to deep-rooted social trauma, emotional fragmentation, a breakdown in the culture of coexistence, and growing mistrust among communities.

He highlighted the significance of the recent statement by the PKK, which suggested an end to armed conflict and a shift toward a civilian and peaceful approach. According to Yılmaz, this could mark the beginning of a new period, provided that it is handled carefully and lessons are learned from the failures of previous peace negotiations.

‘PERMANENT PEACE REQUIRES RESPONSIBLE ACTION’

Yılmaz stressed that society expects a sincere and comprehensive resolution to the Kurdish issue. He warned that human rights cannot be subject to political bargaining, and added that the ongoing conflict affects not just Kurds but everyone living in Turkey. A transformation from violence to peace, he said, is only possible if all parties involved act with a shared sense of responsibility and take mutual confidence-building steps without delay.

He also stated that sustainable peace cannot be achieved without facing past injustices, uncovering the truth, and ensuring justice in a restorative manner. The PKK’s efforts to end armed conflict and embrace civilian political methods, along with the cessation of violence, were noted as important developments.

“These hopeful steps must not be wasted due to the usual arrogance of the state,” Yılmaz said, warning that mishandling the process could cost society another historic opportunity.

‘NOW IS THE TIME FOR CONCRETE STEPS’

Concluding his remarks, Yılmaz called on all segments of society to support and take ownership of the process. “It is no longer a time for waiting,” he said, “but a time for concrete steps. Everyone must raise their voice for peace and become a subject in shaping this process.”
